Arnhem is een stad en gemeente in Nederland en de hoofdstad van de provincie Gelderland. De gemeente telt 163.072 inwoners per 1 juli 2021 (bron: CBS) en is daarmee de twaalfde gemeente van Nederland.

Arnhem wordt (als Arneym) voor het eerst genoemd in 893 in een register van de bezittingen van de Abdij van Prüm in de Eifel. Het wordt beschreven als een aan Sint Maarten gewijde kerk, met omliggende landerijen. Hoewel de vroege sporen van nederzettingen getoond hebben dat de vroege Arnhemmers zijn afgedaald uit de hoger gelegen bossen, is Arnhem oorspronkelijk niet gebouwd op de oevers van de Rijn, maar op het hoger gelegen deel langs de Sint-Jansbeek. Arnhem ontstond op de plek waar de weg tussen Nijmegen en Utrecht/Zutphen zich splitste. Zeven sprengbeken voorzagen de stad van water en pas toen de loop van de Rijn in 1530 door de Arnhemmers verlegd werd kwam Arnhem aan de rivier te liggen.

De nederzetting kreeg op 13 juli 1233 stadsrechten van graaf Otto II van Gelre, de graaf van Zutphen. Arnhem had in de 13e eeuw 2000 tot 3000 inwoners, die binnen de vestingwallen van de huidige binnenstad woonden. Hoewel Arnhem al voor de stadsrechtsverlening een vorm van verdediging had, groeide deze in 1291 uit tot stadsmuur, die in 1505, 1519 en 1533 werd uitgebreid om ten slotte in de 19e eeuw te worden afgebroken.

Arnhemland is een gebied van 97.000 km², in het noordwesten van het Australische Noordelijk Territorium. Het gebied kreeg zijn naam van Matthew Flinders, die het noemde naar het Nederlandse schip De Arnhem, dat in 1623 de kust verkende. Het schip was op zijn beurt weer vernoemd naar de Nederlandse stad Arnhem. Het gebied is sinds 1931 een reservaat voor de Aborigines. In dit reservaat wonen de Yolngu, een van de grootste inheemse stammen van Australië. Het gebied wordt nu namens de Aborigines bestuurd door de Northern Land Council, maar werd tot het midden van de jaren 50 bestuurd vanuit de hoofdstad Darwin.

Arnhem is a city and municipality in the Netherlands and the capital of the province of Gelderland. The municipality has 163,072 inhabitants as of July 1, 2021 (source: CBS), making it the twelfth municipality in the Netherlands.

Arnhem (as Arneym) is first mentioned in 893 in a register of the possessions of the Abbey of Prüm in the Eifel. It is described as a church dedicated to Saint Martin, with surrounding lands. Although the early traces of settlements have shown that the early Arnhem inhabitants descended from the higher forests, Arnhem was not originally built on the banks of the Rhine, but on the higher part along the Sint-Jansbeek. Arnhem arose at the place where the road between Nijmegen and Utrecht/Zutphen split. Seven spring streams supplied the city with water and only when the course of the Rhine was diverted by the people of Arnhem in 1530 did Arnhem come to lie on the river.

The settlement received city rights on 13 July 1233 from Count Otto II of Gelre, the Count of Zutphen. In the 13th century Arnhem had 2000 to 3000 inhabitants, who lived within the ramparts of the current city center. Although Arnhem already had a form of defense before the city law was granted, this grew into a city wall in 1291, which was expanded in 1505, 1519 and 1533, before finally being demolished in the 19th century.

Arnhemland is an area of 97,000 km² in the northwest of the Australian Northern Territory. The area got its name from Matthew Flinders, who named it after the Dutch ship De Arnhem, which explored the coast in 1623. The ship was in turn named after the Dutch city of Arnhem. The area has been an Aboriginal reserve since 1931. This reserve is home to the Yolngu, one of Australia's largest indigenous tribes. The area is now administered by the Northern Land Council on behalf of the Aborigines, but was administered from the capital Darwin until the mid-1950s.
