De slag om Arnhem had 70 jaar geleden het einde van de Tweede Wereldoorlog moeten inleiden en de val van Berlijn. Het liep anders. De oorlog duurde voort en Berlijn werd uiteindelijk vanuit het Oosten ingenomen.
Duitsland werd verdeeld, Berlijn opgedeeld door de Berlijnse muur. Deze muur werd hét symbool van de Koude Oorlog. 25 jaar geleden, op 9 november 1989 werd ze neergehaald.
De littekens van de geschiedenis zijn in Arnhem en in Berlijn zichtbaar. Zowel de John Frostbrug als de Berlijnse muur zijn wereldwijd iconen geworden van de Tweede Wereldoorlog en de nasleep daarvan, de Koude Oorlog. Zij herinneren de ellende die voortkwam uit opdeling van bevolkingsgroepen en totalitaire ideologieën.
Desondanks verrijzen nieuwe muren en hekken op de wereld, onneembare barrières. Ze vormen steeds hardere scheidingslijnen tussen economieën, culturen en religies. Scheidslijnen die niet alleen vluchtelingen maar ook een echte wereldvrede in de weg staan.
Op meer dan 125 plekken over de hele wereld vormen stukken van de Berlijnse muur een aanklacht tegen deze ontwikkeling. 70 jaar na de slag om Arnhem en precies 25 jaar na de val van de Berlijnse muur kan ook Arnhem een stuk van de Berlijnse muur binnen haar grenzen krijgen.
De Stichting Historische Schepen Arnhem (SHSA) neemt daartoe het initiatief. Het 3,5 ton wegende muurdeel wordt door één van de Arnhemse historische schepen, de Ebenhaezer, van Berlijn naar Arnhem gevaren, een tocht van weken. Dit gebeurt in het kader van de activiteiten van de stichting Muurbrekers, die meer muurdelen met schepen naar Nederland haalt.
Het stuk muur weegt maar liefst 4000 kilo
Op 18 September 2014 komt het stuk muur aan in Arnhem.
Op 9 nov precies 25 jaar na de val van de muur wordt het stuk muur geplaatst op de Rijnkade vlak naast de oude kraan.
Deze plek is maar tijdelijk.
Eind 2015 wordt het stuk muur aan de overkant van de Rijn bij de Stadsblokken en de oude werf geplaatst.

The Battle of Arnhem should have heralded the end of World War II and the fall of Berlin 70 years ago. Things went differently. The war continued and Berlin was eventually taken from the East.
Germany was divided, Berlin was divided by the Berlin Wall. This wall became the symbol of the Cold War. 25 years ago, on November 9, 1989, she was shot down.
The scars of history are visible in Arnhem and Berlin. Both the John Frost Bridge and the Berlin Wall have become global icons of World War II and its aftermath, the Cold War. They remember the misery that resulted from the division of populations and totalitarian ideologies.
Nevertheless, new walls and fences arise in the world, impenetrable barriers. They form ever harder dividing lines between economies, cultures and religions. Dividing lines that stand in the way of not only refugees but also real world peace.
Pieces of the Berlin Wall in more than 125 places around the world are an indictment of this development. 70 years after the battle of Arnhem and exactly 25 years after the fall of the Berlin wall, Arnhem can also get a part of the Berlin wall within its borders.
The Arnhem Historical Ships Foundation (SHSA) is taking the initiative for this. The 3.5-tonne wall section is sailed from Berlin to Arnhem by one of Arnhem's historic ships, the Ebenhaezer, a journey of weeks. This is done in the context of the activities of the Muurbrekers foundation, which is bringing more wall sections to the Netherlands by ships.
The piece of wall weighs no less than 4000 kilos
On September 18, 2014, the piece of wall will arrive in Arnhem.
On November 9, exactly 25 years after the fall of the wall, the piece of wall will be placed on the Rijnkade right next to the old crane.
This place is only temporary.
At the end of 2015, the wall section will be placed on the other side of the Rhine near the Stads blocks and the old wharf.
