Saltstraumen is the worlds strongest tidal current. The maelstrom can reach speeds up to 20 knots. It makes whirlpools up to 10 meters in diameter.
The maelstrom is created in a 3 km long and 150 meters wide strait between the Skjerstad Fjord and the Salten Fjord. The balancing of the high and lowtide is 6 hours and during this period 400 million cubic meters of water flow through Saltstraumen. For a short period the strait lays quite still before the water flows the other way, making bigger and bigger whirlpools.

Parking N67 14.000 E14 37.265 and follow the path under the bridge. It is a very fascinating place.
