Met het onthullen van het oorlogsmonument is het C.M. de Vorplein in Achterveld gereed. SAB heeft het plein als nieuw brandpunt in het dorp ontworpen. Ontmoeting stond daarbij centraal, de ‘huiskamer’ van Achterveld.

De nazaten van oorlogshelden Johan en Jans van Dijk hadden de wens om hen te herdenken met een monument. Johan en Jans hebben tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog gestrande geallieerden en gevluchte Joodse mensen opgevangen en verborgen gehouden voor de Duitse bezetter. Daarvoor hebben zij na de oorlog de eretitel ‘Dragers van het Verzetsherdenkings-kruis’ en de eretitel ‘Rechtvaardige onder de Volkeren’ gekregen. Deze laatste eretitel wordt namens Yad Vashem verleend aan hen die hulp boden aan de Joodse medemens.

“De meeste mensen zwijgen, een enkeling stelt een daad” staat op het hekwerk.

Op verzoek van de gemeente hebben Frank Maas en Luuk Cornelissen het monument ontworpen. Geen alledaagse opdracht, maar vooral een eervolle opdracht. Het monument is op dodenherdenking 2019 onthuld door de burgemeester van de gemeente Leusden.

With the unveiling of the war memorial, the C.M. the Vorplein in Achterveld ready. SAB has designed the square as a new focal point in the village. Meeting was central, the 'living room' of Achterveld.

The descendants of war heroes Johan and Jans van Dijk wanted to commemorate them with a monument. During the Second World War, Johan and Jans took care of stranded allies and Jewish refugees who had fled and kept them hidden from the German occupier. After the war, they were awarded the honorary title 'Bearers of the Resistance Memorial Cross' and the honorary title 'Righteous Among the Nations'. This last honorary title is granted on behalf of Yad Vashem to those who offered help to the Jewish fellow man.

“Most people are silent, a few take action” reads on the fence.

At the request of the municipality, Frank Maas and Luuk Cornelissen designed the monument. Not an everyday assignment, but above all an honorable one. The monument was unveiled on Remembrance Day 2019 by the mayor of the municipality of Leusden.
