Bij het huis der Provinciën in Arnhem staan twee hoge zuilen.
In een folder over het gebouw staat het volgende:
"Voor de toegangspoort staan twee wachters. Ze zijn elk uit één stuk
Beiers graniet gehouwen en vormenletterlijk en figuurlijk de overgang van de Markt naar het Huis der Provincie.
De zuilen verwijzen naar gezag, bewaken als het ware de democratie en
ze leiden de blik naar de toegangspoort.
Wachters voor een belangrijk gebouw zijn van alle tijden, zoals de sfinxen voor een piramide."

'Het echt monumentale gedeelte van het gebouw bestaat uit het hoofdgebouw uit 1954
Wie er langsfietst zonder het al te goed te bekijken, zal niet echt een fan van het bouwwerk zijn. Op het eerste gezicht is het typisch jaren 50-bouw: iets met veel beton en bakstenen. Wie beter kijkt, valt op dat alleen al aan de buitenkant heel veel artistieke details te zien zijn. Een beeldhouwwerkje hier, een kunstig carillonnetje daar… Ze zijn indertijd niet voor niets vier jaar bezig geweest met die vele kunstwerken. Het gebouw is een soort museum waar het zelf onderdeel van is.'

There are two high columns at the house of the Provinces in Arnhem.
A brochure about the building reads:
"There are two guards at the entrance gate. They are each made of one piece
Bavarian granite hewn and literally and figuratively forms the transition from the Market to the House of the Province.
The pillars refer to authority, as it were guarding democracy and
they lead the eye to the entrance gate.
Guards in front of an important building are timeless, like the sphinxes in front of a pyramid."

Anyone who cycles past it without looking too closely will not really be a fan of the structure. At first glance, it is typical 1950s construction: something with a lot of concrete and bricks. If you look more closely, you will notice that many artistic details can be seen on the outside alone. A sculpture here, an artistic carillon there… It is not for nothing that they spent four years working on those many works of art. The building is a kind of museum of which it is itself a part.'
