Voor de kunstenaar Wessel Couzijn waren de grote vorm, de licht- en schaduwwerking en de ruimte om en in het beeld van belang. De tweede periode van de werken van Couzijn loopt tot circa 1959. Een voorbeeld van de tweede periode van Couzijn is de Gekluisterde Hartstocht uit 1954. Het beeld was bestemd voor een politiebureau, maar werd niet geaccepteerd, omdat Couzijn er duidelijk bij vermeldde dat hij met dit beeld wilde zeggen dat ieder mens in staat is om onder bepaalde omstandigheden moorden te begaan; dat juist de onvrijheid hem daartoe bracht. De commissaris wilde daar niet aan.

Het beeld is erg duidelijk en geladen; het toont een soort mensdier, dat beroofd van zijn vrijheid en zijn wezen, weg wil vliegen. De benen zijn gekluisterd, het hart ligt open.

For the artist Wessel Couzijn the large form, the light and shadow effect and the space around and in the image were important. The second period of Couzijn's works runs until about 1959. An example of Couzijn's second period is the Gekluisterde Hartstocht (Chained Passion) from 1954. The sculpture was intended for a police station, but was not accepted, because Couzijn clearly stated that he this image meant that every human being is capable of committing murder under certain circumstances; that it was precisely the lack of freedom that led him to do so. The commissioner did not want to do that.

The image is very clear and loaded; it shows a kind of human animal that, deprived of its freedom and its essence, wants to fly away. The legs are chained, the heart is open.
