McNary Field, frequently referred to as the Salem Airport, is located approximately 2 miles southeast of downtown Salem. The airport is bordered by I-5 to the East and the Pacific Railroad on the West. Presently, the 751 acre airport serves general aviation aircraft and the Oregon Army National Guard - Army Aviation Support Facility.

The American Legion played the lead role in getting the Salem Municipal Airport developed in this location and they proudly assembled August of 1929 to formally dedicate the airfield. From the Great Depression in 1929 until the Stock Market crash in 1941 the airport stood virtually vacant until America's entry into World War II. Property expanded from 220 acres to 458 acres during this time and was primarily used to graze cattle. Then in 1942 the Air Force leased the property from the city. The military purchased 165.85 acres of land to be added to the existing land that the City had purchased for the airport. In addition, the military built a control tower and then began training fighter squadrons there. Soon after the Navy leased a hanger and began aviation training at the airfield.

The airport is made up of two jet runways (one instrument : 5,811' by 150' and the other visual: 5,145' by 100') and supporting taxiways and is owned and operated by the City of Salem. These coordinates were taken by waymarker Rose Red and are located at the south tip of the Airport at Turner Road SE and Airway Drive.

Thanks to Rose Red for all of her help in this endeavor. She did all of the work. :)
