History
The building was built by the Sociedad Amigos del Sardinero, based on the project of the architect Eloy Martínez del Valle . It was inaugurated in 1916 by the president of the Society, Dr. Sánchez-Saráchaga y Rioz . 1 This casino has nothing to do with the one that was built in 1870 in the same place and which was the scene for many years of numerous parties, in which Amadeo de Saboya , Alfonso XIII , Victoria Eugenia , as well as families from the national and international aristocracy who flocked to Santander attracted by the beauty of its beaches .2
This second building combined roulette and baccarat with dances, party favors and the staging of plays , musicals and opera companies that took place in its theater . However, it did not cease to be the nerve center of summer entertainment, a situation that, however, underwent a notable turnaround during the post-war period . The almost total closure of its facilities, except for the theater, which was used as a cinema for art and rehearsal, was maintained until December 1 , 1978 , when it was reopened exclusively as a gambling casino, after the restoration carried out by the architect Ricardo Lorenzo , who preserved the neoclassical style with modernist notes .
It currently has a game room, and a slot machine room , a restaurant , three dining rooms, two bars , installed in each of the game rooms; one cafe and a lounge parties . It also has an exhibition hall where the presence of works of art by different authors is common. The games played in the gambling room are single 0 roulette, blackjack , no -draw poker, and electronic slot machines and roulette in the machine room. Currently the texas holdem modality has been incorporated as tournaments.
The Gran Casino Sardinero sponsors and organizes various cultural and sporting events (Santander International Festival, photographic contests, sculpture and painting exhibitions ; bowling , football , rowing and other activities.
Curiosities
Many sequences inside the Casino, in the Plaza de Italia and Hotel Sardinero and Puertochico from the film (Anglo-Spanish 1981) Blak Jack Asalto al Casino. Director Max H. Buloix, with Peter Cushing, Claudine Auger, Hugo Stiglitz, Brian Murphy, Dan Forrest, Fernando Sancho, Eduardo Fajardo, José Bodalo, Andrés Resino, Victoria Vera.
Several sequences from the end of the Spanish film Airbag ( 1997 ), directed by director Juanma Bajo Ulloa , were shot outside the Casino del Sardinero.
