Het lijkt een scène uit een film. Aan de Broeksteeg in Ede waan je je als fietser opeens op route 66. Midden in een weiland staat een knalrode Opel Blitz voor een retro Esso pompstation uit de jaren zestig. Trotse eigenaar is Kees Slemmer (78).
Zo’n 21 jaar lang bracht Kees petroleum aan de man in Ede en omstreken. Eerst met een transportfiets en een paardenkar, later met de Opel Blitz. “Mijn buurman vroeger aan de Kraatsweg, J.W. Jansen, was petroleumboer. Als jonge jongen ben ik bij hem in dienst gekomen.” Twaalf jaar werkte de twee samen, tot Jansen 65 werd en Kees het goedlopende bedrijf over nam.
Retro pompstation
In een open schuur achter zijn huis staat de fiets waar hij als jochie mee langs de deuren ging. In een krat voorop de jerrycans voor de petroleum. Tientallen petroleumkacheltjes sieren de planken langs de wanden. “Ik heb er een zwak voor, sommige zijn nog van klanten, andere heb ik op rommelmarkten op de kop getikt.”
De ruimte om zijn huis heeft Kees ingericht als klein museum. Zo staan er twee authentieke hondenkarren, met op de zijkant ‘De Automaat’. “De naam van de maatschappij die ons de petroleum leverde, een voorloper van Esso”, zegt Kees. Zelf ging hij er de deuren niet mee langs. “Nee, die karren waren van voor mijn tijd, nog voor de oorlog. In 1920 reden er in Nederland nog 250 van rond.”
De eerste jaren ventte Kees met paard en wagen waarop de jerrycans stonden. Jansen had een tank in de grond waar 6000 liter in kon. “Door aan het wiel van de pomp te draaien, kwam er vijf liter omhoog. Voordat we op pad konden, moesten we ons eerst in het zweet werken.”
In het glazen kantoortje van het Esso benzinestation, zelf gebouwd aan de hand van een origineel exemplaar, staat een pop in het uniform van de maatschappij. “Zo liep ik erbij”, zegt Kees niet zonder trots. In de zomer stoppen er regelmatig fietsers bij de boerderij. Nieuwsgierigen die even komen kijken wat er allemaal te zien is. “Ze zijn welkom, ik vertel er graag over.” Fiets jij hier langs? It looks like a scene from a movie. At the Broeksteeg in Ede, you suddenly find yourself on route 66 as a cyclist. In the middle of a meadow, a bright red Opel Blitz stands in front of a retro Esso gas station from the sixties. The proud owner is Kees Slemmer (78).
For about 21 years Kees sold petroleum in Ede and the surrounding area. First with a transport bike and a horse cart, later with the Opel Blitz. “My neighbor at the Kraatsweg, J.W. Jansen, was a petroleum farmer. I joined him as a young boy.” The two worked together for twelve years, until Jansen turned 65 and Kees took over the successful company.
Retro gas station
In an open shed behind his house is the bicycle he used to go door to door with as a boy. In a crate at the front the jerry cans for the petroleum. Dozens of kerosene heaters adorn the shelves along the walls. “I have a soft spot for it, some are still from customers, others I picked up at flea markets.”
Kees has arranged the space around his house as a small museum. For example, there are two authentic dog carts, with 'De Automata' on the side. “The name of the company that supplied us with the petroleum, a predecessor of Esso,” says Kees. He himself did not go through the doors with it. “No, those carts were from before my time, before the war. In 1920 there were still 250 of these in the Netherlands.”
In the first few years, Kees peddled with a horse and cart on which the jerry cans were standing. Jansen had a tank in the ground that could hold 6000 liters. “By turning the wheel of the pump, five liters came up. Before we could hit the road, we had to work up a sweat.”
In the glass office of the Esso gas station, built itself from an original, there is a doll in the uniform of the company. “That's how I walked,” says Kees, not without pride.
