This is not the most wellknown landmark in the city but probably the most wellknown statue, well... perhaps second to the Poseidon statue, that is kind of an icon for Gothenburg.
The Copper Mare (Kopparmärra in Swedish) is the nickname given the statue of King Charles IX (1550-1611) by the residents of Gothenburg. He is actually riding a stallion, but by calling it a mare the citizens diminished the pompous royal masculinity it was supposed to communicate.
The statue was made by John Börjeson, cast in bronze (88% copper) at Otto Meyer's Konst-, Metall- och Zinkgjuteri in Stockholm and was inaugurated in 1904 by the Swedish King Oscar II (1829-1907). The statue is a much used place of meeting.
By the way, King Charles IX made a first attempt to found a city here in 1604. The present location of the city was ordered by King Gustav II Adolf (1594-1632).
