A troll of carved wood guards the entrance to the Troll Forest. The troll leans on a stick with a wolf's head. Artist unknown

A troll is a creature in Scandinavian folklore. They are human-like, and dress like humans. However, they are very ugly and rarely kind-hearted, almost sour.
They have large noses, often with warts, large hands and feet. Moreover, they can be recognized by the fact that they only have 4 fingers and 4 toes, where humans have 5. And last but not least ... they have a tail.
The trolls most often live in a cave in the forests or in the mountains, and they prefer to stay away from humans. Only if humans have bothered them can they catch a human.
The trolls sleep during the day and are active at night. It is said that they turn to stone if they are hit by the sun's rays. When it gets dark again, they turn into trolls again. Trolls get very old, it is not uncommon for them to be over 1000 years old.
