Geschiedenis van het St. Jozefgesticht. In het voormalige St. Jozefgesticht zijn onder andere thans gehuisvest de Stichting Oud Soest, de Stichting Vrienden van het Museum Oud Soest en de Historische vereniging Soest-Soesterberg.
Bij akte van 6 maart 1853 verkreeg de parochie een stuk bouwland ter grootte van 42 roeden en 50 ellen, kadastraal sectie H nummer 317/18 en een perceeltje van 7 roeden sectie H nummer 319. Op deze grond zo was het plan zou het St Jozefgesticht met klooster en schoollokalen voor de meisjesschool verrijzen. Onderwijs, bejaardenzorg en armenzorg zijn altijd een bijzondere taak voor de kerk geweest.
Met de zusters van O.L. Vrouw te Amersfoort werd overeengekomen dat zij in het te bouwen gesticht een kloostergemeenschap zouden vestigen die de uitvoering van de beoogde taken op zich zou nemen. Het gebouw zou eigendom van de kerk blijven, maar werd in gebruik gegeven aan de zusters.
Ook in Soest hebben de Zusters van Onze Lieve Vrouw van Amersfoort een belangrijk rol gehad in de ontwikkeling van het katholieke onderwijs.
Scholen stonden onder het rechtstreekse beheer van de in 1888 als juridisch lichaam opgerichte stichting, genaamd Onze Lieve Vrouwe Stichting.
Vooral op het terrein van het kleuteronderwijs hebben de Zusters van Onze Lieve Vrouw baanbrekend werk verricht. In Amersfoort begon men al vrij snel met de opleiding van de zusters voor de bewaarschool. Geregeld kwamen de zusters bij elkaar om ervaringen uit te wisselen en nieuwe methodes te leren. Daaruit is uiteindelijk de kleuterleidsteropleiding voortgekomen. Spoedig na de onderwijskundige start werd begonnen met de opleiding van onderwijzeressen.
In 1869 werd in Soest reeds een normaalschool opgericht, die later - in 1888 - overgeplaatst werd naar Amersfoort. Met deze activiteit werd niet allereerst gedacht aan het samenstellen van leer- en lesmaterialen, maar vooral aan de toerusting en de bijscholing van de kleuterleidsters en onderwijzeressen en aan de opleiding van nieuwe gegadigden.
De kloosterzusters hadden naast de zorg voor ouderen ook de zorg voor een meisjesschool, een bewaarschool (vroegere kleuterschool) en een naaischool. Er was ook een jongensschool maar die was niet in het klooster gevestigd.
In het nieuwgebouwde St. Jozefgesticht beginnen de Zusters van Onze Lieve Vrouw onderwijs te geven aan die roomse meisjes, die tot dan toe naar de school in de Kerkebuurt gingen. Dat was dus de eerste groep die vanaf 1869 echt katholiek onderwijs kreeg. De jongens volgden een paar jaar later, het begon met de meisjes, nu 125 jaar geleden.
ongeveer 14 zusters verzorgden in huis plm 16 oude mannen en circa 23 vrouwen. Daarnaast dienden zij de naaischool, de bewaarschool en ook de lagere school die in 1872 112 leerlingen telde, welk getal in 1906 al tot 158 was uitgegroeid.
In 1902 werd door de bouwkundige van de gemeente Soest naar de gebreken van het zusterhuis gekeken. Er moest nodig worden gerenoveerd. Ook de meisjesschool voldeed niet aan de eisen van de tijd. Het kerkbestuur was bang dat de schoolopziener zou gaan adviseren de meisjesschool te sluiten. Het is in onze tijd niet voor te stellen dat in een school geen privaten of garderobegelegenheid aanwezig is. De school was ook te klein geworden door toename van het aantal meisjes. Ook de huisvesting van de bejaarden was gebrekkig.
De zusters stelde voor een nieuwe meisjesschool te bouwen en de vrijgekomen lokalen te gebruiken voor verruiming van de huisvesting van de ouderen. En zo gebeurde. De zusters waren lief en zorgzaam genoeg maar de middelen om de mensen een goede oude dag te bezorgen waren onvoldoende.
Tot hoelang de school in gebruik is gebleven is niet duidelijk. Wel is bekend dat er op 19 juli 1931 in het St Jozefgesticht een dubbel jubileum wordt gevierd. Zuster Maria Tarbula viert haar zilveren klooster - jubileum en zuster Frederica - hoofd meisjesschool - haar gouden kloosterfeest. Uit de schoolkas (het kerkbestuur vormde tevens het schoolbestuur) wordt f 200,-- voor de feestelijkheden beschikbaar gesteld.

Soon after the educational start, the training of female teachers was started.
In 1869 a normal school was already established in Soest, which was later - in 1888 - transferred to Amersfoort. This activity was not primarily concerned with compiling learning and teaching materials, but especially with regard to the equipment and further training of kindergarten teachers and teaching staff and the training of new applicants.
In addition to caring for the elderly, the nuns also took care of a girls' school, a kindergarten (former kindergarten) and a sewing school. There was also a boys' school, but it was not located in the monastery.
In the newly built St. Joseph's Institute, the Sisters of Our Lady begin to teach those Roman girls, who until then went to the school in the Kerkebuurt. So that was the first group to receive real Catholic education from 1869. The boys followed a few years later, it started with the girls, now 125 years ago.

The sisters proposed to build a new girls' school and to use the vacant rooms to expand the housing of the elderly. And so it happened. The sisters were sweet and caring enough, but the means to ensure a good old age were insufficient.
It is unclear how long the school remained in use. It is known that a double jubilee will be celebrated on July 19, 1931 in the St Joseph's Hospital. Sister Maria Tarbula celebrates her silver monastery - jubilee and Sister Frederica - head of the girls' school - her golden monastery feast. F 200 is made available from the school coffers (the church board also formed the school board) for the festivities.
