The Verne High Angle Battery is a derelict Victorian gun battery built in 1892, but used during WWI for storing field guns from France.

Now a semi-tourist attraction, being shown on sign posts and guide books etc. The site remains derelict and has unfortunately suffered at the hands of vandals due to its exposed position.

" Verne Quarry High Angle Battery, disused battery approximately 150 metres south-south-east (south-east-south in listing) of south entrance to Verne Citadel. The high angle battery was built in 1892 as part of the coastal defences at Portland, it was built partly in an old quarry and was armed with four guns capable of firing in any direction. The battery included two magazines and would have been surrounded by an unclimbable fence. Four new gun pits and a war shelter, for protecting the troups, were added when the battery was remodelled in 1898. The battery was disarmed in 1906 and from 1918 was used for storing field guns from France. "
