Bygningen passer ind i omgivelserne.

In 1958, an architectural competition was announced to design a new art museum in Aalborg. Alvar Aalto won the competition in collaboration with his wife Elissa Aalto and the Danish architect, Jean-Jacques Baruël, who worked at Alvar Aalto's design studio at the time. In 1963, the contract with Alvar Aalto was signed.
The Art Museum of Modern Art Aalborg was built 1968-1972, and built in white marble with details in redwood and ash wood, copper and brass. It is executed in modernist style in varied levels. Many differently shaped windows, both on the facade and on the roof, provide a unique light inside the building.
Also inside, the entire floor is in marble. All lamps are designed by Alvar Alto and are made of copper.
The building fits into the surroundings. It is built in an old gravel pit, and the many windows give it a nice view of the hill and forest as well as the surrounding park with works of art.
The museum's total area is approx. 6000 m2.
