The Sirocco Engineering Works was once a significant part of Belfast’s engineering industry. It was founded in 1881 by inventor Sir Samuel Davison, to manufacture tea drying machinery and later fans and ventilation systems.
"When he demonstrated the new fan he had invented, someone remarked that it blew so hot and strongly that it was like the Sirocco wind that blows from the Sahara. That was the perfect name for his fan, he realised. As with the multitude of other inventions that he would create, he was most careful to take out Patents on every one of them, together with the trade-mark, ‘Sirocco’."

The works occupied a large site that was bounded by the River Lagan, Bridge End and Short Strand. The old chimney was retained as a “landmark feature” when the buildings were demolished in 2009.
"Plans to turn the former Sirocco Works site into a waterside development with offices for 8,000 workers and provide homes for more than 1,500 residents has been approved by Belfast City Council."
