Elsa Laula Renberg 29 November 1877 – 22 July 1931 was a Sámi activist and politician.
For much of the 20th century, the Sami were forbidden to speak their own language. A strict policy of assimilation forced the Sami to speak Norwegian exclusively. Joik - the Sami folk music - which is one of Europe's oldest singing traditions, was also banned. Elsa Laula Renberg was like many Sami reindeer herders but it became problematic to have reindeer as the grazing areas were limited by the government.
In 1904, she founded the South Sami Fatmomakka Association, which was the first Sami activist organization.
The aim was to combat increasing state colonization and the presence of settlers on Sami lands. Furthermore, the social, economic and political position of the Sami had to be improved. She wrote a 30-page pamphlet in Swedish entitled "Are we facing life or death? The word of truth about the Lapland situation", making her the first Sami woman to have her writings published.
She also became chair of the organizing committee for the first Sami assembly in 1917 in Trondheim.

The sculpture is financed by Sparebankstiftelsen Helgeland, the Sami Parliament and Nordland County Municipality. Artist Ellen Jacobsen has made the sculpture.
