The Bellefonte Nuclear Power Plant is a defunct power plant. Construction started in 1975 and was halted in 1988. It has been in suspension since with only 2 of the 4 reactors in place, 2 cooling towers and no activity at all from the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA). The TVA decided it no longer has a use for the power plant and has had the land up for sale since 2015 with potential buyers coming and going while keeping up with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) permits. As of September 2021 TVA withdrew its request for an extension on construction permits for the unfinished portions of the plant, this stopped any prospect of completing the plant as a nuclear generation facility. In almost 50 years, this large construction project has in turn become a money pit for TVA and the Alabama taxpayers.
