'In het Arnhemse stadsdeel Meinerswijk ligt het enige Gelderse limesfort dat ook archeologisch is aangetoond. Er is veel discussie geweest over de Romeinse naam van het fort. Lange tijd vermoedde men dat dit het uit andere bronnen bekende Castra Herculis zou zijn, maar volgens de laatste stand van kennis gaat het om Levefanum.

Het fort is waarschijnlijk aangelegd rond het jaar 15 n.chr., ter voorbereiding van de Germaanse veldtochten van de Romeinse generaal Germanicus. Het fort lag strategisch tegenover de monding van de voorloper van de IJssel, die toen nog afwaterde in de Rijn in plaats van het IJsselmeer. Meer dan een halve eeuw later viel het castellum ten prooi aan de gewelddadigheden van de Bataafse Opstand. Een teruggevonden, dikke brandlaag is daarvan de stille getuige. Het fort is vervolgens herbouwd, mogelijk gedeeltelijk in steen. Rond 170-180 bouwden de Romeinen een compleet nieuw fort in steen.

De Romeinen moeten flinke last hebben gehad van wateroverlast. In verschillende fasen is het hele terrein meer dan twee meter opgehoogd. Dat zou ook voor hedendaagse begrippen niet genoeg zijn: nog steeds kan (en mag) het gebied overstromen. Ook de huidige visualisatie van het fort – bestaande uit schanskorven – krijgt dan natte voeten, wat een heel bijzonder gezicht oplevert.'

The Romans must have suffered greatly from flooding. The entire site has been raised more than two meters in several phases. That would not be enough even by contemporary standards: the area can (and may) flood. The current visualization of the fort – consisting of gabions – will also get wet feet, which makes for a very special sight.'
