This is NASA's only way to create weightlessness while on earth. The airplane, affectionately called the Weightless Wonder, and not so affectionately called the Vomit Comet, provides brief (less than 30 seconds at a time) periods of true weightlessness. It does this by flying a series of parabolas -- going up and then letting the plane "fall" back toward the ground. This period of falling is called "free-fall" and during this period you become weightless just like in space.

It's called the vomit comet because few people can take a trip on it without . . . well, you know.
