The prison, that is what most people in Aalten say when they mean this building at Prinsenstraat 40. Now it is a house but in the past it has really been a prison. The Netherlands is divided for the judiciary in Kantons, with each Kanton having its own court. The Aalten area was also a Kanton.
Before someone could be tried, he or she had to be locked up in a prison. That is why a prison was built on this site in 1861 with six cells in it. The prison did not exist for very long because in 1886 it was closed again. Over time, the building deseed further and further. In 1987 the building was completely restored and converted into a home. After that, the building also received the status of Municipal Monument.

De gevangenis

Dit pand - in de volksmond de gevangenis genoemd - werd ingevolge een Koninklijk Besluit van 1841 gebouwd in 1861 als Kantonnaal Huis van Bewaring. Er waren 6 cellen. In 1886 werd het als zodanig gesloten. In 1987 gerestaureerd en voor bewoning geschikt gemaakt.

The prison

This building - popularly called the prison - was built in 1861 as a Cantonal House of Detention pursuant to a Royal Decree of 1841. There were 6 cells. In 1886 it was closed as such. Restored in 1987 and made suitable for habitation.
