"A Willibrordus well is a well or well that tradition has it that it was dug by Saint Willibrord.[1]
When the locals were in need of water, Willibrord struck the ground several times with his staff, whereupon a well sprang up. By seeing this miracle, the local population would have been converted to Christianity. The water from these springs was later attributed medicinal properties. For example, the Gebreck van Sint Willebrort (rickets) was combated with this water.
The symbolism surrounding this may be influenced by the fact that Willibrord thus gave a Christian content to the nature worship of the Germanic peoples whom he tried to Christianize. It ignores the sometimes violent actions of Willibrord and his followers, in which shrines were destroyed or desecrated."
