"It is the first synagogue built in the North, shortly after the important immigration of Jews from Alsace or from Central European countries in the second half of the 19th century.

Built by the Lille architect Théophile-Albert Hannotin, the synagogue was inaugurated in 1891. It is part of a new district developed during the second half of the 19th century, the Lille “Latin Quarter”, consisting of the church Saint-Michel, the university and the Protestant temple, located nearby.

Used by the Germans to store their materials, the Lille synagogue is one of the few in France to have kept its original furniture, designed by Hannotin himself, following World War II.

In Romano-Byzantine style, the synagogue of Lille has a nave 17 meters long and 7.6 meters wide supported by twelve cast iron pillars which represent the twelve Jewish tribes. Surmounted by the tables of the law, its pediment is framed by two pilasters decorated with pairs of storks, a reminder of the origin of the community.

It is inscribed with a text from Genesis: "This is none other than the house of the Lord, and this is the gate of heaven" (???? ???, ???? ???-????? ????????, ?????, ?????? ???????????)."

Construite par l'architecte lillois Théophile-Albert Hannotin, la synagogue a été inaugurée en 1891. Elle s'inscrit dans un nouveau quartier aménagé au cours de la seconde moitié du XIXe siècle, le « quartier latin » lillois, constitué de l'église Saint-Michel, l'université et le temple protestant, situé tout à côté.

Utilisée par les Allemands pour stocker leur matériel, la synagogue de Lille est l'une des rares de France à avoir gardé son mobilier d'origine, conçu par Hannotin lui-même, à la suite de la Seconde Guerre mondiale.

De style romano-byzantin, la synagogue de Lille présente une nef de 17 mètres de long sur 7,6 mètres de large soutenue par douze piliers de fonte qui représentent les douze tribus juives. Surmonté des tables de la loi, son fronton est encadré par deux pilastres décorés de couples de cigognes, rappel de l'origine de la communauté.

Elle porte en inscription un texte de la Genèse : « Ceci n'est autre que la maison du Seigneur, et c'est ici la porte du ciel » (???? ???, ???? ???-????? ????????, ?????, ?????? ???????????). "
