Bodø is a municipality in the Nordland Region. There is a population of 49,040 people. In 2016, Bodø was named Norway's most attractive city. Bodø has a vibrant cultural life and will be the European Capital of Culture in 2024. The town of Bodø is surrounded by nature, mountains and the sea.

Many buildings in the town of Bodø are relatively new when the town was bombed on 27 May 1940 by the Germans. Of the city's 760 houses, 420 were lost in the German attack. 15 people lost their lives during the bombing. About 4,000 people had no place to live after the bombing. The consequences were enormous for many years to come.


The town hall building, which is Renaissance-inspired, was built in 1959. It was designed by the architects Gudolf Blakstad and Herman Munthe-Kaas who also designed the Cathedral and the Post Office. The building is the municipality's political and administrative headquarters.
