Monastero e chiesa di San Salvatore

I resti della chiesa sono l'unica parte oggi in vista del piccolo monastero di San Salvatore fatto construire da Ansa, moglie di Desiderio, ultimo re dei Longobardi. Esso si sviluppava a nord della chiesa e solo future indagini archeologiche potranno metterlo in evidenza.
Il complesso, edificato nella seconda metà dell'VIII secolo, si estendeva non lontano dalla cinta fortificata della penisola di Sirmione, costruita tra la fine del V e l'inizio del VI secolo d.C. Un tratto delle mura e gli avanzi di una torre del castrum sono ancor oggi visibili poco più a est verso il lago.
La chiesa, benché in rovina, fu descritta e rilevata dallo studioso veronese Giovanni Girolamo Orti Manara alla metà dell'Ottocento, quando le strutture erano meglio conservate e nelle absidi rimanevano parti considerevoli degli affreschi medievali.
Alcuni elementi che facevano parte dell'arredo architettonico e decorativo della chiesa (il famoso archetto di ciborio dedicato da Desiderio e dal figlio Adelchi e alcuni capitelli) sono esposti nel Museo dell'area archeologica delle 'Grotte di Catullo'. Anche diverse iscrizioni romane, riutilizzate nell'edificio religioso come materiale da construzione, sono state recuperate nell XIX secolo e si trovano ora nello stesse Museo.

Monastery and church of San Salvatore

The remains of the church are the only part to be seen today of the small San Salvatore monastery built at the behest of Ansa, the wife of Desiderius, the last king of the Lombards. It developed north of the church and only future archaeological investigations will be able to bring it to light. The complex, built in the second half of the 7th century, lay not far from the fortified ring of walls of the Sirmione peninsula, built between the end of the 5th and the beginning of the 6th century AD. A stretch of the walls and the remains of a tower of the castrum are still visible today a little further east towards the lake.
The church, although a ruin, was described and noticed by the Verona scholar Giovanni Girolamo Orti Manara in the miggle of the nineteenth century, when the structures were better preserved and in the apses there were still considerable parts of the medieval frescoes.
Some elements that belonged to the architectural and decorative traüüings of the church (the famous little ciborium arch dedicated by Desiderius and his son Adelchis and some capitals) are on display at the Museum of the Archaeological Area of the 'Grotte di Catullo' (Caves of Catullus). Various Roman inscriptions, reused in the church as construction material, were also recovered in the 19th century and are now in the same museum."
