"The Gothic church was created by rebuilding the Romanesque basilica, built in the early 12th century. The Gothic reconstruction took place in 1450-1520, when the present three-aisled church was vaulted on the original foundations and a presbytery and sacristy were built. reconstructed (architect Rudolf Štech).

The original Romanesque basilica from the first quarter of the 12th century has been located on the southeast corner of the fortification of Slaný for centuries. So it stood here before the royal residence itself was established. When it was to be fortified, it was decided to incorporate the temple into the safety of the walled city. Due to this, the Slaný walls have a somewhat atypical shape - the classic rectangular floor plan was disturbed by the just protruding south-eastern corner of the fortification with the church of St. Gothard. Thorough Gothic reconstruction took place from the second half of the 15th century. and was not completed until 1520, the newly built presbytery was vaulted with a beautiful net vault. To this day, the original late Gothic truss has been preserved, which has maintained its place even during extensive reconstructions at the end of the 19th century. To the east of the church, in the place of an ancient swamp, are the remains of a moat protecting the adjacent Prague Exhibition Gate with a forecourt. Today, the fire tank is still called Brod."
