ENG:

In Bergen op Zoom, in front of the town hall on the Grote Markt, I saw a stone in the sidewalk with the text: D'historie/van deez'plaats/mag Bergen leren:/laat eigen vrijheid/nooit/in 't Tegendeel/verkeren(From the history of this place Bergen may learn; let liberty never become the opposite). Above the text is the date February 2, 1795. Below the text are the dates 1956 and 1981. The freedom tree and the phrygian hat are placed in the quarters on top, symbols for freedom. At the bottom are the Tudor rose and King Arthur, symbols for the Round Table. The stone was placed by Hein Vree on behalf of the Round Table.

I read from the magazine De Waterschans, first edition from 2004, that the freedom tree was placed here in 1795. This year the Batavian Revolution took place in the Netherlands. Inspired by the French Revolution (and intimidated by French troops in the Netherlands), the citizens of the Netherlands also seized power instead of the elite and nobility. To mark this, freedom trees were placed everywhere, including here in front of the town hall.
