In 1890, Idaho was admitted as the 43rd state in the United States. In order to celebrate the state’s fiftieth anniversary in 1940, the U.S. issued this postage stamp. What do you put on a stamp to commemorate a state famous for potatoes? The state capitol building, of course. Helping in that decision was the fact that Idaho’s state capitol building was celebrating its twentieth anniversary in 1940.

Architects John E. Tourtellotte and Charles Hummel designed the Idaho state capitol using St. Peter’s in Rome, St Paul's in London and the U.S. Capitol as inspiration. The impressive structure stands 208 ft. tall (five feet of which is a copper eagle perched atop the dome). Inside is 50,000 sq. ft. of artistically carved marble from four source locations: Georgia, Vermont, Alaska and Italy.

The Idaho state capitol building is now over 100 years old but looking pretty good for its age, especially after a multiyear, multimillion dollar restoration effort completed in 2010.
