The small town of Leuchars is situated in the north-eastern part of the Kingdom of Fife on the east coast of Scotland. Its principal feature is the church of St Athernase, situated on a hillock in the centre of an oval graveyard, with a distinctive curved eastern end, topped by a bell-tower. The church, in local sandstone, was built by Robert de Quinci from 1183-87, and is an excellent example of surviving Romanesque architecture in Scotland.

It was dedicated to Bishop de Bernham of St.Andrews in 1244 and features nave, chancel, aspe, and south porch. The bell tower was added in the 17th century, and the nave was rebuilt by John Milne in 1856-58.
