About the Royal Sphinx company
"Koninklijke Sphinx, formerly Petrus Regout & Co., locally known as De Sphinx, was a Dutch company founded by Petrus Regout in 1834 in Maastricht. As the first large-scale mechanized factory, De Sphinx is seen as the cradle of the industrial revolution in the Netherlands. At the death of Regout in 1878 there were about 2,500 workers. The company was initially known as a producer of glassware, crockery and other household pottery; later mainly of tiles and sanitary ware, such as washbasins and toilet bowls. The factory ceased to exist in 2009, although the brand name "Sphinx" was still used by the Swiss Geberit until 2019.
About the sculpture
The sculptures name is "Relatie", which means relationship in Dutch. The Sfinx organisation meant a lot for the employment in the Maastricht area for many years. The statue shows two people intertwinned (the city and the Sphinx company).
The artist who made the sculpture is Gerardus Schoffelen

About the plaque on the ground
"Works of art were offered for adoption by the Veldeke Krink Mestreech and provided with a bronze plaque explaining the image, dating and artist. These were unveiled on May 16, 2009.

The artwork shows two merged figures.
It was presented to the municipality Maastricht at the 150th anniversary of the pottery factory the Sphinx.
On this occasion, the factory donated to the city ??a collection
of 75,000 pieces of decorative pottery.
