A lot of the Tors or high ground on the Northern part of the moor had a number of Granite built Army huts. These huts were used by range wardens when live firing took place on the firing ranges. Today most of these have been replaced by metal huts delivered by Helicopter. There are a few original buildings still remaining , this being one of them.

During live firing, these huts were occupied by Range wardens who job it was was to prevent unsuspecting walkers roaming into the live firing and secondary to monitor livestock doing the same.

Today this still goes on but the more comfortable metal huts are used. The range wardens mostly still access the huts by horse and you will find a stable nearby.

This hut is inside the Okehampton live firing range so please check live firing dates before venturing out to this one.
