"On September 5, 1911, the population of Vlissingen went into shock. Their church, with all its tombstones and monuments, was on fire. Firefighters and residents did everything in their power to save the building. In vain. The fire had spread to the tower, which collapsed. The crowd came down violently and fell on the remains of the church building.
Hardly anything was spared. Not only a large part of the furnishing was lost. This also applied to the organs in the church.
The northern cross arm was used as the "English Church". A wall separated this part from the rest of the church. Here, too, little was spared. Only the old gate can still be seen on the Branderijstraat."
