"Abraham Caland was born as the son of a dike worker, and in his youth worked on the Westkapelle dike. He studied from 1803-1806 at the Institute for Water Management in the Abbey in Middelburg. After having served as a supervisor at the Polder Walcheren, Caland joined Rijkswaterstaat in 1812. In this service he went through all ranks until his appointment as head of the water management of the Zeeland district in 1837. In the rank of chief engineer he held this position until 1854. After his resignation, Caland was appointed president of the Central Board of Walcheren. He remained active in this office until his death."
