"It is a statue of admiralty mother Maayken Jans Evertsen who lived from 1573 to 1647. Maayken was the mother of two admirals Evertsen and her husband also sailed the world's seas.
The statue for the admiralty mother was the great wish of historian and biographer Doeke Roos Sr from Vlissingen. According to him, Maayken Jans Evertsen symbolizes all the women who stood behind their seafaring men in the Golden Age.
Family business
Maayken Jans was the driving force behind the family business on shore. For example, she arranged for the ships to have food and drink on board and took care of a total of eleven children and the household."
