Hoogkruisen zijn kenmerkend voor de keltisch-christelijke cultuur. Het zijn stenen monumenten die in Ierland, Schotland, Cornwall en Wales worden aangetroffen op kloosterterreinen en bij kerken, op begraafplaatsen en soms op kruispunten van wegen. Sommige hoogkruisen in Ierland dateren al uit de tijd van Willibrord (zevende/achtste eeuw), sommige uit de tiende eeuw; ze zijn dus veel meer dan 900 jaar oud. Een met afbeeldingen versierd hoogkruis in De Bilt is het enige in zijn soort op Nederlandse bodem. Op het kruis zijn talloze bijbels-christelijke taferelen afgebeeld.
