"The commune of Long has the richest peat marshes in the Somme valley, peat bricks constituting a cheap fuel. Auctioned, these lands provided significant income for Long throughout the 19th century. And these were used in particular to finance the construction of the hydroelectric plant, inaugurated on June 7, 1903. In Picardy, the small town was thus a pioneer in this field.

Projected in August 1900 for a population of 1,200 inhabitants, the construction of this brick building on stilts began on June 21, 1902.

Project management is provided by the Daydé and Pillé Establishments, which form the General Electricity Company of Creil (Oise). The following year, the Long Municipal Water and Electric Lighting Service was inaugurated.

Electricity grids are being set up throughout the village of Long, and the electricity produced by the factory's turbines provides lighting for its inhabitants at night. Until the 1940s, each household in the town was equipped with a single bulb, supplied with 110 volts, before a second bulb came with it, with alternating use.

Quickly, the Catelet annex was attached to it, followed by the towns of Villers-sous-Ailly and Cocquerel, in 1912.

Emphasizing the exceptional nature of this equipment in rural areas, the town has long been nicknamed "Long, city of light", but ultimately, sacrificing the cost of new modernizations, it must join the EDF network in 1968.

The machine room of this factory occupies the entire ground floor. The central part is surmounted by a floor intended for the accommodation of the mechanic. The interior has kept all the machinery in working order. Two 36 hp turbines, fitted with a ball regulator, power three dynamos, which produced a direct current of 120 volts. A third torque turbine dynamo from the Compagnie Générale Electric de Nancy (Meurthe-et-Moselle) with an oil pressure regulator from the Teisset-Rose-Brault brand is also in place. It dates from 1928 and was intended for the water supply system for households in Long commune.

The Long hydroelectric plant, classified as a Historic Monument in 1984, has been open since 1991 to the public, who can visit an industrial facility, period and in working order."

"La commune de Long possède les plus riches marais tourbeux de la vallée de la Somme, les briques de tourbe constituant un combustible bon marché. Mis en adjudication, ces terres ont procuré tout au long du XIXe siècle d’importants revenus à Long. Et ceux-ci ont notamment servi à financer la construction de l’usine hydroélectrique, inaugurée le 7 juin 1903. En Picardie, la petite commune faisait ainsi figure de précurseur dans ce domaine.

Jusqu’aux années 1940, chaque foyer de la commune est équipé d’une ampoule unique, alimentée en 110 volts, avant que ne l’accompagne une seconde ampoule, avec un usage alterné.

Rapidement, l’annexe du Catelet y est rattachée, suivie des communes de Villers-sous-Ailly et de Cocquerel, en 1912.

Soulignant le caractère exceptionnel de cet équipement en zone rurale, la commune est longtemps surnommée « Long, ville lumièr », mais finalement, sacrifiant au coût de nouvelles modernisations, elle doit se rattacher au réseau EDF en 1968.

La salle des machines de cette usine occupe tout le rez-de-chaussée. La partie centrale est surmontée d’un étage destiné au logement du mécanicien. L’intérieur a conservé l’ensemble des machines en état de fonctionnement. Deux turbines de 36 ch., dotées d’un régulateur à boules, alimentent trois dynamos, qui fabriquaient un courant électrique continu de 120 volts. Un troisième couple turbine dynamo de la Compagnie générale électrique de Nancy (Meurthe-et-Moselle) avec régulateur à pression d’huile de la marque Teisset-Rose-Brault est également en place. Il date de 1928 et était destiné au système d’alimentation en eau des foyers de la commune de Long.

L’usine hydro-électrique de Long, classée Monument historique en 1984, est ouverte depuis 1991 au public qui peut ainsi visiter une installation industrielle, d’époque et en état de marche."
