On November 30, 1978, the first IKEA store in the Netherlands opened in Sliedrecht.

In 1982 a so-called catalog shop was opened in Amsterdam on the Stadhouderskade near the Albert Cuyp. They could only buy small items, larger items could be picked up at the warehouse on the Cruquiusweg. This was followed by a new 'real' branch in Duiven. In 1985 IKEA was able to move from Amsterdam to the new Bullewijk business park in Amsterdam Southeast.
