Originally known as City Park, John Olmsted offered several suggestions for changes in the park's design, including a name change, as part of his park plan for the city of Portland in 1903.

In 1903, John C. Olmsted toured Portland and recommended changes to the park: he advised changing the name from City Park to one of more distinction (Washington Park), moving the main entrance to Park Place, separating vehicular traffic from foot traffic, and restoring some of the formally planted areas to their natural beauty with native shrubs and ground cover.
These ideas where incorporated into the park and over the years it has become a major destination for visitors to Portland. The park has large rambling open spaces, an arboretum, Oregon's first zoo, a children's museum, nature center, Japanese garden, famous rose garden, a monument to Lewis and Clark, several memorials, fountains and statues...
Park hours: 5:00am-10:00pm. Closed to vehicles at 10:00pm. SW Washington Way closed Mon-Thu.
