The beach image of SPO (Sankt Peter Ording) is characterised by the up to 7 m high pile dwellings, which have long since become the landmark of the town. For more than 100 years, the wooden huts on stilts, made of larch wood, have made a significant contribution to the beach image of St. Peter-Ording. On every beach in Ording, Bad, Dorf and Böhl there are pile huts close to the shore.
From poison stalls to today's pile dwellings
In 1911, the first pile dwelling, the "Giftbude", opened its doors in SPO. In typical North German fashion, the name indicates that "wat geev" ("something to eat") is what you get here after jumping into the cool water, because the main purpose of the wooden buildings even then was to cater to the well-being of beachgoers. In order to offer water lovers more comfort and safety on the beach, additional pile dwellings were erected for bathing supervision and changing rooms.
Today there are five pile dwelling restaurants on the long beach of SPO, which prepare one or two culinary delights for guests and locals. Here you can have a delicious meal with the best view of the North Sea and enjoy the sun in good weather on the terraces. The pile dwellings have also been awarded the label "simple cultural asset".
