Het Zuiderspoor, de geschiedenis herleeft - Enschede - the Netherlands - Artistically Decorated Utility Boxes on Waymarking.com

In the Stroinkslanden Zuid district in Enschede, a work of art has been made of two utility boxes. One of telephone company KPN and another from manager of the electricity networks ENEXIS. This artwork is placed on the corner of Hanterlanden and Buurserstraat.

A local resident wanted to realize a work of art at this spot. In the past, the Zuiderspoor was located on this location.

The original plan to paint only the two utility boxes was abandoned, the fence behind it also became part of the artwork.

In 2016 artist Sonna Krom painted all panels in oil. September 30 of that year, it was unveiled at a neighborhood party.

In the time when Enschede was still a real industrial city with mainly textile factories, all the coal needed was transported via the Zuiderspoor. Most of the coal came from the German Ruhr area and later from even as far as Donetsk.
At the end of the railway line were the traders who took care of the further distribution.

The theme of the artwork goes much further than just the supply of coal.
Conditions in the factories were very bad, a 14-hour working day was considered normal. Many children were also employed in the dangerous factories. Strikes were broken, with all factories closed and no one paid.
There were 74 chimneys in Enschede that provided a lot of dirty air.
It is all depicted on the panels.
The two lions represent the oppression of the workers by the manufacturers.
