Driving through certain parts of Kansas, one realizes why a grain elevator was chosen for this stamp since you’re hardly ever out of sight of one. According to the U.S. Postal Service, a photo of the grain elevator at Danville KS, was used in the design of this stamp. The photo was cropped (and reversed) so that only the top of one side can be seen.

In this area of the country, it’s usually the grain elevators that dominate the landscape, but Danville has another building looming over it: the Immaculate Conception Catholic church. This Gothic-Romanesque structure was built between 1904 and 1907 when its congregation was growing rapidly. Now it seems out of place as the current population of Danville is less than 40.
