In the 13th century there was a parish in Baardwijk with a brick parish church. Only the old Tower (de oude Toren) of this church on the Winterdijk has been preserved. Because Baardwijk was located in the county of Holland, a Protestant congregation was founded, the official religion. The church of Baardwijk passed into Protestant hands.

Roman Catholics had a church in 1637 in the house chapel of Mr van Baardwijk and later in a shelter or barn church. The church will continue to exist until 1911 as a Dutch Reformed Church. Due to dilapidation it was no longer possible to keep the church and it was decided to build a new church on a new location. The nave of the old church was subsequently demolished and the tower preserved. The Protestant congregation has its own cemetery on Torenstraat, directly underneath The Old Tower (de Oude Toren).

The church is still in function and is used/occupied by the Reformed Protestant Church (Hervormde Kerk).

Traditionally, the Reformed Church Baardwijk has an open denominational signature. This means that the Bible is at the basis of the faith of the Church as it found expression in the creeds of the Early Church and of the Dutch Reformation.

On the other hand, this open denominational signature implies that the Church is open to new forms of church services, faith transfer and community building. Examples are drinking coffee together after the services, the conversation circles and children's religious celebrations.

The church is a national monument (#521861)
