Terlingua was a mining company owned by Chiso Mining company from 1903-1946. In 1942 the company filled for bankruptcy. The terlingua mine produced cinnabar ore. The ore was ground and heated and a vapor which was mercury was driven off and collected in flaskes. Workers breathed in the vapor during smelling and subequently suffered from loss of hair and teeth. Extensive exposure often resulted in insanity. The mine was the most productive mine in Texas, producing over 100,000 flasks of mercury.
