The mining disaster that hit the Jindrich Larisch-Mönnich mines on June 14, 1894 was the largest mining disaster in the Ostrava-Karviná district to date. The explosion hit the František Mine; during the subsequent fire in it and in the neighboring mines Hlubina and Jan Karel, which were connected to it underground, 235 people died.
