King’s Tor is a tor on Dartmoor which is rather interesting because of the old Plymouth and Dartmoor Railway which encircles it on three sides. Many people visit this tor while walking the railway. There are several small granite quarries on the tor. On the western side is the King’s Tor Halt where the trains used to stop not only to drop off and pick up its passengers but to collect granite for export.
The Plymouth and Dartmoor Railway was opened in 1823 and was principally built to serve the granite quarries.
The stretch between Princetown and Yelverton later became a branch line of the Great Western Railway. It closed in 1956 but has since become a popular walking route.
