Vadstena Slott was built between 1545 and 1620 by order of King Gustav Wasa in Vadstena (Östergötlands Län) on Vättern as a moated castle. The floor plan forms a square fortress with round bastions at the corners, the three-storey main building with a central tower faces the lake. In addition to its initial use as a fortress, the palace was intended as a representative residence by the royal family. After 1716, the royal family lost interest in maintaining the castle and the municipality of Vadstena used it for a long time as a warehouse for grain and as a production hall. With the relocation of the State Archives to the castle in 1899, renovation measures were initiated, and in 1935 it was included in the list of Swedish architectural monuments.

The castle is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in summer (early June to late August), and from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. the rest of the year. Admission, including various changing exhibitions, costs 90 SEK for adults, 80 SEK with proof of discount, and children between 8 and 17 years of age pay 70 SEK.
