Virtual Fairytale 2.0 is in 2007 speciaal gemaakt voor het buitenterrein bij de entree van het nieuwe gebouw van Hart van Noord. Het ruim zestig meter lange mozaïek van gekleurde betontegels strekt zich uit over de brede strook grond voor het complex. Het totale gebouw omvat drie basisscholen, een kinderopvang, een instelling voor sociale dienstverlening, een sportaccommodatie van de gemeente Utrecht en appartementen. In het kunstwerk zijn de wensen van de bewoners en gebruikers van Hart van Noord meegenomen. Zo is het kunstwerk van bovenaf goed te zien en sluiten de gebruikte motieven – hedendaagse sprookjesfiguren en helden afkomstig uit computerspellen – aan bij de belevingswereld van kinderen afkomstig uit alle delen van de wereld.

de kunstenaar Arno Coenen studeerde in de jaren negentig mediakunst en Computer Graphics aan de Minerva Academie in Groningen. Sindsdien werkt hij aan een indrukwekkende hoeveelheid projecten: videoclips, sculpturen, radioprogramma’s, billboards, mozaïeken, glas-in-loodramen en hij treedt op als veejay. In zijn werk figureren beelden uit de massa-media, van computergames en strips tot vechtsport en reclame. Met zijn populaire beeldtaal bevraagt, bekritiseert en actualiseert Coenen de westerse iconografie.

Virtual Fairytale 2.0 was specially made in 2007 for the outdoor area at the entrance of the new Hart van Noord building. The more than sixty meter long mosaic of colored concrete tiles extends over the wide strip of land in front of the complex. The total building comprises three primary schools, a childcare facility, an institution for social services, a sports facility of the municipality of Utrecht and apartments. The wishes of the residents and users of Hart van Noord have been included in the artwork. For example, the artwork is clearly visible from above and the motifs used - contemporary fairytale characters and heroes from computer games - tie in with the perception of children from all parts of the world.

the artist Arno Coenen studied media art and computer graphics at the Minerva Academy in Groningen in the 1990s. Since then he has worked on an impressive number of projects: video clips, sculptures, radio programs, billboards, mosaics, stained glass windows and he performs as a veejay. His work features images from the mass media, from computer games and comics to martial arts and advertising. With his popular visual language, Coenen questions, criticizes and updates Western iconography.
