 She has been at home in Reims ever since she convinced Charles VII to go to Reims Cathedral to be anointed King of France and drive out the English occupiers.
The Statue
"The National Academy of Reims thought of a monument to Jeanne d'Arc in 1885, and launched a public subscription in 1888. The contract was signed between Paul Dubois, Alphonse Gosset, the architect of the Grand Théâtre de Reims, and the notary Raoul Douce.
The statue, commissioned in 1890 from the founder Pierre Bingen by Paul Dubois, was completed in 18961, is located on the Place du Cardinal-Luçon in Reims. It is offered to the city and inaugurated by the President of the Republic Félix Faure, on July 14, 1896. Originally, the statue is placed on the forecourt and turns its back on Notre-Dame de Reims cathedral, representing the exit of Joan of Arc of the building, just after the coronation of Charles VII2.
Unlike the equestrian portrait by Emmanuel Frémiet in 1874 (Paris, place des Pyramides), in which Jeanne holds a standard, Paul Dubois represents her brandishing a sword. In these last years of the XIXth century, the exaltation of the young Lorraine also took on a symbolic and political value, linked to the loss of Alsace-Lorraine at the end of the Franco-German war of 1870. Nevertheless, at- beyond this strictly political dimension, studies for the face of Jeanne show Dubois anxious to give a mystical expression to his character. "

"Joan of Arc, born around 1412 in Domrémy, village of the duchy of Barn, and died at the stake on May 30, 1431 in Rouen, capital of the duchy of Normandy then possession of the kingdom of England, is a heroine of history of France, warlord and saint of the Catholic Church, nicknamed since the 16th century "the Maid of Orleans".
Captured by the Burgundians at Compiègne in 1430, it was sold to the English by Jean de Luxembourg, count of Ligny, for the sum of ten thousand pounds. Joan of Arc was locked up a month in the keep of the castle of Beaulieu les Fontaines (June 1430) by the Burgundians after her capture at Margny-lès-Compiègne on May 23, 1430. She was condemned to be burned alive in 1431 after a trial in heresy led by Pierre Cauchon, bishop of Beauvais and former rector of the University of Paris. "

À l'origine, la statue est placée sur le parvis et tourne le dos à la cathédrale Notre-Dame de Reims, figurant la sortie de Jeanne d'Arc de l'édifice, juste après le sacre de Charles VII2.
A la différence du portrait équestre réalisé par Emmanuel Frémiet en 1874 (Paris, place des Pyramides), dans lequel Jeanne tient un étendard, Paul Dubois la représente brandissant une épée. En ces dernières années du XIXe siècle, l'exaltation de la jeune Lorraine prenait aussi une valeur symbolique et politique, liée à la perte de l'Alsace-Lorraine à l'issue de la guerre franco-allemande de 1870. Néanmoins, au-delà de cette dimension proprement politique, les études pour le visage de Jeanne montrent Dubois soucieux de donner une expression mystique à son personnage. "

"Jeanne d'Arc, née vers 1412 à Domrémy, village du duché de Barn, et morte sur le bûcher le 30 mai 1431 à Rouen, capitale du duché de Normandie alors possession du royaume d'Angleterre, est une héroïne de l'histoire de France, chef de guerre et sainte de l'Église catholique, surnommée depuis le XVIe siècle « la Pucelle d'Orléans ».
Capturée par les Bourguignons à Compiègne en 1430, elle est vendue aux Anglais par Jean de Luxembourg, comte de Ligny, pour la somme de dix mille livres. Jeanne d'Arc fut enfermée un mois au donjon du château de Beaulieu les Fontaines (juin 1430) par les Bourguignons après sa capture à Margny-lès-Compiègne le 23 mai 1430. Elle est condamnée à être brûlée vive en 1431 après un procès en hérésie conduit par Pierre Cauchon, évêque de Beauvais et ancien recteur de l'université de Paris. "
