"The architect Rafael Moneo designed two translucent glass cubes as "two beached rocks" in an attempt to "perpetuate geography and, as far as possible, underline the harmony between the natural and the artificial." The building has been distinguished with the Mies van der Rohe Prize for Contemporary Architecture, the most important of those awarded in Europe, for “the exceptional character” of the project and its “conceptual, aesthetic, technical and constructive innovation”.
One of the great expressions of contemporary architecture, a work of art that since its construction is a hallmark of Donostia/San Sebastián, a conference center that hosts everything from festivals to fairs of all kinds.
The Kursaal is the result of an ambitious project with which Donostia / San Sebastián and Gipuzkoa have equipped themselves with a modern and innovative infrastructure for holding congresses and cultural activities."
