In het verleden werd regelmatig grondwater (ook welwater genoemd), of regenwater voor consumptie of andere doeleinden gebruikt. Vooral bij boerderijen vond men vaak een eigen waterput, in dorpskernen werd hiervoor een waterpomp geplaatst.
De dorpspompen waren bestemd voor gemeenschappelijk gebruik en een ontmoetingsplaats voor de bewoners. Ook de was werd bij dit soort pompen gedaan.
Ook in Makkinga is een dorpspomp te vinden, dit is een gietijzeren pomp die dateert uit circa 1880. De pomp is buiten bedrijf gesteld en dichtgemaakt.
In 1996 is het gebied rondom de pomp verfraaid, zoals vermeld op de naastgelegen steen:

In the past, groundwater or rainwater was regularly used for consumption or other purposes. Farms in particular often found their own well, in village centers a water pump was installed for this purpose.
The village pumps were intended for communal use and a meeting place for the residents. The laundry was also done with these types of pumps.
A village pump can also be found in Makkinga, this is a cast iron pump dating from circa 1880. The pump has been decommissioned and closed.
