In de 17e eeuw werd in Drenthe begonnen met de ontginning van het Drentse veen. Voor de afvoer van de turf en de ontwatering van het gebied werd tussen 1750 en 1780 een nieuw kanaal gegraven tussen Meppel en Assen, de Drentsche Hoofdvaart.
Het kanaaltracé met een lengte van 44 kilometer volgde voor een deel de loop van enkele riviertjes. Tussen Meppel en Assen was er sprake van een behoorlijk verval. Om dit op te lossen werd in 1870 een zestal sluizen gebouwd met sluiswachterwoningen in een standaardbouwstijl. Door de toename van het scheepvaartverkeer aan het begin van de twintigste eeuw ontstonden er problemen met het op peil houden van de waterstand bij de sluis. Dit werd opgelost door het bouwen van een elektrisch gemaal bij de sluis. In de jaren ’50 werd een tweede pompgebouw bijgebouwd.
De Dieversluis is een stenen schutsluis gebouwd in 1879 en heeft vandaag vooral een recreatieve functie omdat er weinig beroepsvaart meer over de Drentsche Hoofdvaart vaart. De sluis heeft een (schut-)lengte van 27,5 meter en is 6 meter breed. De houten sluisdeuren zijn handbediend.
